Where and how to become involved with African humanitarian efforts is often the most important question to address. Health related initiatives including sanitation and clean water, malaria prevention and treatment, and AIDS awareness are making great strides to improve life. Micro financing and micro franchising programs are opening economic opportunity and quality-of-life improvements. Education will provide the foundation for sustainable change in the region. Resolve to be in for the long term and pick an effort where your passion is engaged.

Empower Playgrounds, Inc. (EPI) is focused on improving education in rural African villages. Our current activity is in Ghana, West Africa. Here’s how you can help:

Make a Donation—Even a Small Donation. The EPI model is to put all possible value into the local economy. Ghanaians manufacture, install and maintain the playground equipment. They are trained and paid a competitive wage. Currently we have to import the gearboxes, power controllers, LED lanterns, and the wind power generators that are used in the playground equipment. That takes money. Our commitment to you is that every dollar you donate will go to Africa. All technical and business development costs in the U.S. are covered by committed donations through 2009.

Consider an Internship in Ghana. The EPI business plan includes use of college interns in Ghana as trainers and role models. There are opportunities in manufacturing and engineering, science education, social impact assessment, and school selection and ownership models. If you have skills in one of these areas, are willing to work long hours for little or no pay, and don't mind living in conditions that make any college dorm look good, contact EPI at:

Spread the Word. If you like what EPI is doing, spread the work to your friends, family, and work associates. Remember 100,000 donations of $5.00 each will do as much good as 5 donations of $100,000.00 each. We’d like both, of course!
